The GameWays Anti-Poaching training course consists of three phases that take place over a period of three months.

The course allows for both males and females between the ages of 18 to 45. Students with a criminal record would not be able to participate in the course.

All courses, except for anti-poaching and lodge management, are conducted in Afrikaans. Students who understand Afrikaans are welcome to sign up.

The Program includes the following

Phase 1: Self Study at Home (One month before arriving at GameWays)

Wildlife Campus Anti-Poaching course: - Theoretical.

  • GameWays will register applicants at Wildlife Campus for their Anti-Poaching course module.
  • Students must complete this online course over a period of one month. 
  • After successfully passing the online exam students will receive a certificate from Wildlife Campus at GameWays. 
  • This certificate forms part of the admission requirements to participate in the practical GameWays course.

Phase 2: Practical training at Gameways

PSIRA- Grade E & D Security Officer:

The two-day security guard course forms part of the practical Gameways Anti-Poaching course and an exam will be written at GameWays. 

If students pass the exam a security guard qualification certificate would be handed to them, and students will then be registered with PSIRA (Private Security Industry Regulating Authority)

Firearm competency course for Business purposes:

When arriving at GameWays students will be required to complete a three-day firearm competency course.  The law requires that any person who wishes to use a firearm for business purposes (security guard) needs a business competency. 

The course will consist of the following modules:

  • U/s 117705 – Knowledge of Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000
  • U/s 119649 – Handle and use a Handgun
  • U/s 119650 – Handle and use a Self-loading Rifle or Carbine
  • U/s 119651 – Handle and use a Manually Operated Rifle or Carbine
  • U/s 119652 – Handle and use a Shotgun
  • U/s 123511 – Handle and use a Self-loading Rifle or Carbine for Business Purposes
  • U/s 123514 – Handle and use a Shotgun for Business Purposes
  • U/s 123515 – Handle and use a Handgun for Business Purposes
  • U/s 123519 – Handle and use a Manually Operated Rifle or Carbine for Business Purposes

(Your firearm competency certificate and application should still be submitted at your nearest SAPS firearm branch after completion of the course)

Medical certificate:

Students must obtain a letter from a registered medical practitioner stating that they are physically fit to participate in a fitness training program.

Fitness requirements:

Students will have to successfully pass the fitness test on arrival at GameWays to participate in the course. 

After passing the fitness test students must complete another fitness test one week into the course. 

The minimum fitness test consists of the following:

  • 50x sit-ups in 2 minutes.
  • 5 km run in 30 minutes.
  • 30x pushups without breaking pace.
  • 30x 6-meter sprints in 90 seconds.

Uniform:

On arrival students will be issued with 2x camo long pants, 2x long sleeve shirts, 2x t-shirts, and 1x camo floppy hat, to use for the duration of the course.

Practical Modules during the practical phase at GameWays:

  • First Aid Level 2 courses with a focus on the Anti-Poaching environment.
  • Security Guard Studies PSIRA Grade E & D.  
  • Poisonous Snake Handling Certificate
  • Advanced Firearm training and night fire exercise with various types of firearms.
  • Bushcraft: kit, fire, water, food, cooking and tool use.
  • Navigation skills and Map reading.
  • Animal postmortem, dissection, anatomy study.
  • Hunting, snaring, and trapping.
  • Human tracking skills and counter tracking.
  • Crime scene management. 
  • Radio procedure and communication.
  • Surveillance, observation posts and intelligence.
  • Anti-poaching patrolling
  • Ambush & Counter Ambush drills (layout and procedure)
  • House searching and clear
  • Close combat & self-defence.
  • Big Game identification and behavioural studies. 
  • Tactical exercises: During the course, students would be required to handle various firearms.

Phase 3: Field practical phase

Anti-Poaching field practical:

  • The final phase of the Anti-Poaching training involves a two-week deployment as an Anti-Poaching unit in a nature reserve where some of the “big 5” are present.
  • Here students will get valuable experience in a Big 5 environment under the supervision of experienced anti-poaching units or security guards.  
  • Candidates would be constantly monitored to see if students can practically implement the training that was provided to them.  
  • Students will spend most of their time in the bush including spending their nights under the stars.
  • During this phase, students are placed under the operational command of the nature reserves security units. 
  • The reserve security units will establish the daily duties and placement of the students. 
  • At the end of this phase, students are evaluated and they receive their final marks & certificates.

Gameways training facility

The 2,200 Hectare GameWays training facility is ideal for Anti-Poaching training. The training facility is located outside Steenbokpan about 65 km West of Lephalale, in the Limpopo bush veldt.

Course fee:

The course fee is R39 850.00 – a 50% deposit is payable to reserve your place. 
VAT included.

Course Instructor

The main course instructor will be Colonel (retired) Sidney Zeeman. Sidney took early retirement from the SANDF after 36 years of service. As officer commanding of 5 SA Infantry Battalion and the SA Army Support Base Ladysmith, his responsibilities included the combat readiness of forces under command; the training of Parks Board rangers in the KwaZulu Natal Province; and the management of command functions such as human resources, security, logistics, procurement, facilities, and communications.

He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Military Science at the University of Stellenbosch and a Certificate in Total Quality Management at the University of South Africa.

He also completed the Executive National Strategic Program (ENSP) at the SA National Defense College.
